EXECUTIVE MARITIME MBA

Presentation:

The MBA programme consists of a number of modules which form the theoretical building blocks for an advanced degree in management and its application in the complex global maritime environment.  For those professionals who lack a basic knowledge in certain domains, Euromed Management offers the participants optional general management courses via distance learning, prior to the start of the MBA programme.

The maritime industry is not limited to shipping, ports, shipbuilding and marine equipment, but includes all the others sectors within the broad maritime cluster, such as the offshore industry, maritime services, yachting, navy, research and education, and fisheries.

Objectives:

The Maritime MBA: an executive programme

The Maritime MBA, as an executive programme, targets the professionals in the maritime cluster and maritime related sectors who already have a basic academic education and a number of years of hands-on experience in a maritime company, institution or public service.

The programme consists of 9 intensive, one-week modules, under six main headings.

The introductory module under the heading The maritime industry in a global perspective, focuses on the drivers behind the major maritime markets, such as the global economy and international trade and the relationship with shipping markets and ports, as well as shipbuilding, maritime services, in short, the entire maritime cluster.

The two Maritime Competences modules within the programme are not the sum of fragmented sectoral views, but rather promote an integrated approach to the challenges of the entire maritime industry. That is why the programme is called the Maritime MBA. Graduates not only are taught the specialised maritime subjects ship technology and operation, maritime strategy and value chains, but also learn much more generic subjects under the broad headings of Management Skills, Leadership, and Culture and Vision.

The two Management Skills modules deepen and broaden the knowledge of the students in for example, strategy, finance, logistics and ICT, human resources, which are generic domains for managing global businesses.

The two Leadership modules enhance the management capacity of the individual student through courses in for example team and conflict management, negotiation, time management, and interpersonal communication.

The Culture and Vision module is geared to strengthen the knowledge of international trade and maritime economics, geopolitics, cultural diversity, ethics and sustainable development.

The Maritime MBA is concluded by a Strategy Thesis Project module. The student has to prove that, based on real world challenges, he or she is able to integrate the various elements of the modules into a holistic approach. Ideally, the subject of such a thesis project should be related to the student’s company or organisation. The results of such a project could thus be useful to the company and even implemented upon graduation.

The students are linked via an internet based discussion platform to each other and the staff, in the periods between modules. This way a virtual community is created which will undoubtedly form the basis of long lasting friendships.

Description of the Modules

The Maritime Industry in a Global Perspective

Module I
The maritime industry is the critical enabler of international trade and thereby of the global economy. Understanding the structure of the maritime industry and its intimate relationship with trade and economy is a prerequisite to understand the drivers of the maritime markets. In this first module the focus is on four themes: shipping markets and international trade, maritime and port economics, global logistics and supply chain management, maritime clusters and business models.
The other modules will be introduced, as well as the course work method and examinations.
Apart from that, during the evening sessions, a team building programme will take place, supplemented by special group events.

Maritime Core Competences

Module III
The Maritime MBA assumes a basic knowledge of the maritime industry, either based on prior academic learning, or through extensive work experience. In this module, the fundamentals of the maritime professions will be revisited.
These include the basics of marine technology (ship design) and shipping innovation, maritime operations and fleet management, maritime information and communication technology, and the maritime global institutional framework, including an introduction to maritime law and the various types of insurance.

Module VI
The second module on Maritime Core Competences deepens the understanding of maritime economics and explores a fundamental approach to port competition. The use of structured finance and derivatives in the maritime industry builds on the finance lectures within the Management Skills modules (modules II and IV).
Maritime procurement and contracts, as well as E-commerce and E-business, precede the subjects of global sourcing of ships, marine equipment, crews and supplies.
This module is concluded with life cycle management of ships and the way forward towards sustainable and safe ships, ship operations and maritime innovation.

Management Skills

Module II
The maritime industry is capital intensive and ships have a long life of over 25 years. Investment and finance decisions, as well as risk management are therefore crucial subjects within a maritime company. The module teaches the basic theory and tools and their applications. Investing in new ships and markets should be based on formal or informal strategic analysis.
Corporate strategy concepts are explored and business cases are discussed from within the maritime industry. The maritime industry operates on a global basis which places special demands on the organisation, human resources management and business skills and these subjects are therefore part of the programme.
The module is concluded with the methodology of analysis of the maritime value chain and how to manage specific parts of the chain.

Module IV
The second Management Skills module starts with basic accounting theory and applications, investment analysis and ship finance. The maritime markets are often specialised and require a different approach to market analysis and business-to-business marketing. The analogy with other capital goods sectors (i.e. aeronautics)
is presented as well as advanced simulation tools and other decision support systems in the maritime industry.
Management skills draw upon a basic level of personal creativity and problem solving capability. How to become aware of one’s own creative potential is part of this module.
How to create the innovative organisation (i.e. open business models) and how to manage strategic change and the resistance to change are essential topics.
At the end of the module the Strategy Thesis Project is introduced as students have to start early with a corporate problem analysis or opportunity search in order to find a subject for their graduation thesis project.

Leadership

Module V
The Maritime MBA programme is not only about academic teaching, but also about the more specific human qualifications, in particular elements of personal and corporate leadership. To this end two modules have been included in which the participants discuss and experience team dynamics and conflict management, leadership, personal development and interpersonal communication, and the importance of trust.
Besides, practical subjects like negotiation skills, time management and effective reporting conclude this module.

Module VIII
Leadership in the maritime world is about setting the course of the organisation. But “if you do not know where you are, you do not know where you are going to” this requires a thorough understanding of the current SWOT of the company. Corporate strategy is revisited from the perspective of personal leadership, while the inputs from other modules is used to “create the future” of the company, but at the same to stay with two feet firm on ground in order to survive in the challenging maritime markets of today.
Creating a balanced and diversified team for a strategic plan exercise, and the structuring of business plans are other building blocks for a high-level maritime executive’s position.
Implementing the strategic and business plans require special attention as well.

Culture and Vision

Module VII
The history of the world is determined by many forces, among which the struggle for scarce resources like food (grain), water, oil, ores, and so on. International politics is often determined by these so-called geopolitics, which have an important impact on global resources and maritime markets.
Global economic growth is not evenly spread around the world, which leads to differing levels of economic, social and cultural development and consequently to political tensions. The differences in factor costs result in comparative advantages which stimulates the division of labour around the globe. The end result is often increased levels of trade, maritime transport, but also of labour mobility.  The maritime industry is and has been for thousands of years the most international sector of the economy and is therefore used to dealing with multi-cultural organisations and working in the various civilisations of the world. Managing this colourful fabric of professional human beings is one of the challenges that an executive is faced with. How to deal with these aspects and the differences in ethics and corporate governance is also part of the module.

Strategy Thesis Project

Module IX
“The proof of the pudding is in the eating” would be an apt paraphrase of the Strategy Thesis Project. The student has to write a thesis in which contents taught in the Maritime MBA are integrated into a logical whole. The student is invited to select a topic for the thesis within his parent organisation. If required, course management will assist the student in this process. The selection of a topic starts early in the year in order to have the time to do a comprehensive thesis project. The Strategy Thesis Project will form the basis of the final oral graduation examination.

Corporate testimonies

Corrado ANTONINI
Chairman, FINCANTIERI
Chairman, Federation of the Sea (Italian Maritime Cluster)

By targeting the broad maritime cluster, including the shipbuilding industry, the Maritime MBA is a good opportunity for managers to take a step back from their day to day business within their own sector and to develop a deeper understanding of all other sectors within the maritime cluster and to learn the broad range of management skills that will enhance their management qualities. As chairman of the Italian Maritime Cluster organisation, and member of the European Network of Maritime Clusters, I welcome this initiative.
As chairman of one of Europe’s largest shipbuilders, involved in both civil and naval shipbuilding, I am convinced that companies today must have the ability to compete and cooperate at the same time. Therefore we have decided to join the Maritime MBA Corporate Network and to contribute to this programme with the aim to create lasting relationships from our company and the entire maritime cluster in Italy will benefit.

Philip EMBIRICOS
Director, EMBIRICOS SHIPBROKERS LTD
President, BIMCO

Through the ages, because it is the most economic form of transport, shipping has facilitated migration, the growth of trade and global economic development.
This was particularly evident when ships switched from sail to steam starting the first wave of industrial globalisation at the end of the 19th century. We have witnessed over the past 30 years a second wave through containerisation, which plays a dominant role in the dynamic global economy.
As the industry becomes more concentrated into larger firms there is an increasing need for visionary leaders and executives of maritime companies capable of developing holistic strategies and innovative approaches using the most modern management practices.
By including these goals in its mission, The Maritime MBA has the dynamics to become a real contributor to the maritime community of the future. We therefore became convinced that we should support the programme and join its Corporate Network.

Jean-Bernard RAOUST
CEO, BARRY ROGLIANO SALLES (BRS)

With a non stop and solid growth over the past five years, the maritime industry experiences exceptional times which create huge opportunities (and risks) for companies. Today more than ever, they are faced with major choices:  investing in new ships and innovating new concepts, building strategic cooperation and alliances, opening new markets, controlling and improving processes, sourcing of personnel in the global community.
Theses choices will have to be made by leaders and teams that are able to anticipate the pitfalls and opportunities in the markets, adapt constantly their organization to meet these challenges and implement actions with quality and speed.
The Maritime MBA, can be a partner in finding the answers to these challenges by broadening management’s global vision, improving management skills and deepening maritime competences.
For BARRY ROGLIANO SALLES, being a member of the Maritime MBA Corporate Network is a way to bring our expertise to these challenges and to share our views and experiences with like minded professionals.

Francis VALLAT
President, French Maritime Cluster

From the very beginning, the FRENCH MARITIME CLUSTER has decided to give a strong and exclusive support to the Maritime MBA. That is why we have opened our own network to Euromed Managament and by doing so accelerated the building and recognition of this programme.
This initiative comes at the right time as the maritime community is experiencing a strong revival thanks to the growth of the world economy and trade and the ever increasing globalisation.
We are convinced that first class maritime companies can catch the opportunity of this favourable period to strengthen their executive teams with this unique Maritime MBA.
By offering its experience and its network, the FRENCH MARITIME CLUSTER, intends to act as a permanent link between the Maritime MBA and the maritime professionals, in particular in France and Europe through its affiliation with the European Network of Maritime Clusters.

Tor SVENSEN
Chief Operating Officer, DET NORSKE VERITAS

As a major actor in Quality and Safety Management within the global maritime industry, DET NORSKE VERITAS intends to support the initiative of Euromed Management, School of Management to create a high-level Maritime MBA.
We share the ambition to be the best in the business as we also strive to enhance the management quality and performance of maritime companies.
By gathering high potential executives to share their experience and best practices, by giving them an intensive exposure to the best professionals, experts and academics in maritime, we are convinced that the Maritime MBA will become an adequate tool for their companies to improve its long term objectives.
By joining its Corporate Network we intend to bring our expertise and vision to the program and to contribute to its excellence.
