Anti-consumption and Consumer Resistance: Concepts, concerns, conflicts, and convergence.
ICAR Symposium 2010 will be hosted by Euromed Management
ICAR was founded in 2005 and is hosted at the University of Auckland, while NACRE is European in origin and receives funding from ANR, the French National Research Agency. Both are independent organizations made up of scholars who share an interest in Anti-consumption and Consumer Resistance.
This is ICAR's first venture into the Northern Hemisphere, and the first time it will be combined with another organization (NACRE). This joint ICAR/NACRE Symposium has the combined approval of both the ANR and AFM (French Marketing Association) and the registration fees have been subsidized through the generous assistance of The Association for Consumer Research (ACR).
Though Anti-consumption and Consumer Resistance are receiving more attention, as evidenced by the recent special issues and the consistent boutique conferences in the area, there is still much confusion about the differences and similarities between Anti-consumption and Consumer Resistance. Thus, the main objective of the joint ICAR/NACRE Symposium, in Marseille, is to come closer to identifying where the redundancies and differences are in these two topics, while they are still in the early stages of growing an interested following.
The main audiences of this Symposium are scholars interested in Anti-consumption and/or Consumer Resistance. In particular, younger doctoral students keen to pursue a career researching these topics are encouraged to attend. Another target audience comprises the affiliates of NACRE and ICAR. Some well regarded scholars have already confirmed their willingness to participate and deliver relevant presentations at the Symposium, such as Professors Rob Kozinets, Bernard Cova.
We have timed the ICAR/NACRE Symposium to precede EACR in London on June 30th-July 3rd, it is our hope that scholars with an interest in Anti-consumption and Consumer Resistance will attend the ICAR/NACRE Symposium, enjoy the exotic location of Marseille, and then head towards EACR. We hope that by timing the ICAR Symposium to coincide with EACR, scholars are able to make the most of their time and travel budget.
Previous ICAR Symposiums have been boutique by nature and we plan on retaining our distinctive flavor for this first Northern Hemisphere event. Euromed has placed a limit of 60 spaces. However, the small scale of attendance does not mean that such events are not highly impactful. Previous ICAR Symposiums have led directly to a Special Issues in The Journal of Business Research, 2009, 62(2) (soliciting more than 54 first round submissions) and Consumption, Markets and Culture (forthcoming 2010). Our hopes for ICAR/NACRE 2010 are no less ambitious. In line with previous successes, the ICAR/NACRE 2010 symposium is combined with the European Journal of Marketing (EJM)'s official call for anti-consumption and consumer resistance papers, where approximately 12 research notes or short papers will be published in 2011. The 2008 NACRE conference in Paris Est University on: “Consumption and Consumer Resistance” produced an equitable level of activity and interest, with 46 submissions received and 24 papers selected by a scientific committee within a double blind process. Topics of interest included:
