The passion of science

We invariably recognise the signature of the painter or the poet but is the same true when we consider the work of the scientist? At Euromed Management a researcher, too, is an artist. He/she is at the heart of the creative process, laying down the path in walking. The researcher does not look back into the past but seeks the new and explores the unknown. Our research deals with contemporary questions and problems and does not come up with classical answers. Euromed Management Research responds to the societal and corporate demand to further understanding of everyday problems. The signature of Euromed Management Research is “craftsmanship” rather than duplication and standardisation. Paraphrasing Krishnamurti: “One should dare to ask questions to which answers don’t (yet) exist”.

The research programme at Euromed Management embraces the Euromedian Approach to Management: a holistic and transversal view on management. It not only integrates human values, personal commitment and technically viable approaches (read cutting edge technology and scientific rigour), but considers the broader spectrum of managerial issues, in order to deepen insight into the issues researched.

Fully endorsing the Euromed Vision on Management, we have identified four research programs – the themes are specific but the field of exploration is wide open to new ideas and new ways of thinking. Bringing people together from disparate backgrounds, we collaborate on projects and share a common purpose whilst allowing each researcher enough space for individual creativity. In a compartmentalised world, we knock walls down between disciplines in an aim to better understand the corporate challenges of today.

Our first line of research deals with “diversity”, considering cross-cultural and culture-crossing experiences as a resource for deeper understanding contemporary corporate issues like authenticity, branding, community, consumer experience, identity, Mediterranean marketing, postmodern management thinking and tribalism.
Cross-cultural and cultural crossing (creation of entities using culture), culture is a resource. For the company, the individual, products, etc. Diversity based on the observation of the existing. Multiple selfs (again individually, for companies). Agents theory, every agent chosing and creating within the “resources”. To avoid uniformity (for instance in cultural production).

“Humans in context” investigates a variety of issues including democratisation, economic, political, and social change, Euro-Mediterranean partnership and the Barcelona Process, Islamist movements, reformist Islamic thinkers and political parties, regional integration, regional security, the Southern Mediterranean sector, terrorism, US policy on North Africa, multi-cultural strategies, international business development and leadership. Management and economy is indeed a “people business” concerning people interacting in an ever more complicated geopolitical reality.

“Entrepreneurship and responsibility” concentrates on themes like sustainable finance, sustainable performance, micro finance, SMEs, family businesses, Global Compact and its implications, social (corporate) responsibility and risk management. Back-to-basics, this branch of research re-centres on the concept of entrepreneurship as the essence of the company: the continuous creation of value. Value, however, remains a fuzzy concept, based on a wide range of choices. Euromed Management has chosen to actively support the UN Global Compact programme. The fundamental aim of this research programme is to define the notion of responsible and sustainable entrepreneurship and its application in good practice.
Coordination of economic activity, common objectives, agreements, tools in order to realise the common objectives. Sustainable performance (individual, corporate, …) and new performance indicators.

Finally “complexity, knowledge, learning and innovation” focuses on the causes and processes of emergence. Accepting the dynamic and non-linear nature of management, it examines some of the crucial emergent processes in companies such as knowledge management, management learning, innovation and personal development. It researches the networked economy as well as the networked company. It bases its exploration on a quantum ontology: attempting to identify a-causal relationships based on synchronicity, non-locality and entanglement - the three basic quantum qualities. Different research methods are used, ranging from complex adaptive systems and artificial intelligence, visualisation and social constructivism through to story telling and action research.
Innovative indeed, but innovation is at the very heart of our (research) philosophy. The art of science. Over and above management as a science, at Euromed Management we would like to understand management as an art and see the scientist as an artist. Alongside faculty members and researchers, students can also be a part of our research programmes through their Pro-Act Research projects and assignments. If you would like to embark on a research career, you can already enrol as a PhD student during your ESC studies.
